Description

Opulently decorated Kuba Mukenga / Mukyeem helmet mask from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, adorned with cowrie shells, beads, fur, textiles, raffia and carved wooden elements.

Description

This imposing Kuba helmet mask is constructed from textile and plant fibres and is richly decorated with cowrie shells and geometric beadwork in blue, white and light blue.

The entire face is covered with fur/hair. Centrally located is a separately carved wooden nose, with wooden ears on either side. Broad decorative zones adorned with beads and cowrie shells have been applied around the face.

The high, forward-curving crest is characteristic of the Mukenga or Mukyeem mask type and refers to the elephant. The trunk-like form is covered with textile and trimmed along the edges with cowrie shells, with a compact group of shells and fibres at the end. Around the bottom is a wide fringe of raffia.

Within the Kuba culture, the elephant is associated with power, status and royal authority. The extensive use of beads and cowrie shells also emphasises prestige. Mukenga / Mukyeem helmet masks formed part of the ceremonial and ritual traditions of the Kuba.

Provenance: private collection, France.
