Origin & meaning
This female statue comes from the tradition of the Mumuye in north-eastern Nigeria. Statues like this one were used in ancestor worship, healing rituals and initiation ceremonies. The slender forms, stylised limbs and vibrant patina give the statue a strong spiritual presence. Such statues served as mediators between the world of the living and the spirits.
