Description

Extraordinary Lobi catapult from Burkina Faso that served as both a hunting weapon and ritual object. This beautifully carved specimen shows a pregnant woman, a rare theme referring to fertility and protection.

Origin & meaning
The Lobi are known for their wooden sculptures and utensils with deep symbolism. Catapults were practical hunting instruments, but figurative representations also gave them spiritual connotations. The depiction of a pregnant woman symbolises prosperity, fertility and care for the community. Such pieces transcended their practical function and were seen as talismans for protection and well-being. This specimen comes from a private collection in Castricum.
