Description
Samson coat of arms with the coat of arms of the Irish house of Cantillon and the motto 'Fortis in Bello', 19th-century France.
This porcelain plate was made by the Parisian manufactory Samson, Edmé et Cie, specialising in heraldic and historical porcelain. At its centre is the coat of arms of the Cantillon of Ballyheigue (County Kerry, Ireland), with the motto Fortis in Bello ('Strong in battle'). The coat of arms shows lions as shield holders and a crown above them, framed by colourful flowers and a border with blue-gold accents.
Origin & meaning
Samson manufactured porcelain to order in the 19th century, often for noble or prominent families. This plate reflects not only refined French porcelain art, but also the pride of the Cantillon family and their heraldic motto. For collectors of heraldry and armorial porcelain, this piece has special historical significance.
Historical context
The Cantillon family of Ballyheigue, County Kerry (Ireland), was a noble family that derived its power from estates and military involvement. Their motto "Fortis in Bello" emphasises courage and strength in battle. The fact that this plate specifically shows this family crest indicates that it was probably commissioned at the time as a status symbol and heirloom within the family.
