Description

Elegant French porcelain tea caddy from the late 19th century

Attributed to Samson, Paris, in rich gilt Imari decoration with Oriental figures. This refined porcelain tea caddy features a colourful Imari palette decoration of deep cobalt blue, warm iron red, and rich gilt. The front and rear panels depict a nobleman and lady in an Oriental landscape with architectural elements, framed by floral and decorative motifs. Its square shape with chamfered corners, a perfectly fitting porcelain stopper, and meticulous painting indicate European production, inspired by 18th-century Japanese and Chinese porcelain. Samson of Paris was renowned in the 19th century for its high-quality interpretations of such Oriental styles, often enhanced with gilding.

Origin & meaning
The French workshop Samson, Edmé et Cie produced porcelain from 1845 onwards, inspired by Japanese and Chinese export porcelain. Their Imari imitations are among the most refined in Europe, prized for their rich colours and decorative value. This tea caddy is a fine example of that tradition, showcasing a blend of European sophistication and Asian inspiration.
