Description
Magnificent Roman bronze horse with halter, from circa 200 AD, in excellent condition.
This finely detailed votive figurine of a horse measures approx. 5.1 cm high, 5.5 cm wide and 2 cm deep (without base). It is exceptionally well-preserved, with a refined halter and decorative dots that beautifully accentuate the Roman miniature art. Thanks to its rich patina, this object seems to speak directly from antiquity.
Origin & meaning
Was acquired from a pre-1990 German private collection through Oriental Art Auctions. Horses were strongly symbolically associated with status, ritual and court culture in the Roman Empire. Miniature statues like this one were often used as votives or amulets, possibly at house altars or within personal devotions.
