A stunning Lapis Lazuli sphere with deep royal blue hues and sparkling pyrite inclusions - an exceptional Wunderkammer mineral weighing a whopping 1.058 kilos. The colour strength and gold accents make this a truly luxurious collector's item.
The sphere displays rich layers of intense blue lapis, interspersed with golden pyrite speckles and light calcite veins that add depth to the rock. The texture is vibrant and dynamic, with several zones where pyrite beautifully catches the light. Condition: excellent, with only natural growth lines associated with lapis.
Origin & meaning
Bought at De Zwaan auction house, from Lot 460 of the Christie's South Kensington auction Style & Spirit (25 September 2007). Lapis Lazuli has been loved by royalty since ancient times and was used for pigment, jewellery and ritual objects. This large sphere fits perfectly within a historical Wunderkammer curation.
