Description
Spectacular labradorite sphere with blue-green sparkle - this large 1130-gram mineral sphere displays that typical, magical sheen that collectors are so looking for. As soon as you turn the sphere, wide areas light up in blue, green and steel grey.
The labradorescence is especially strong along one side, with wide bands of blue-green flash and subtle gold highlights. Natural growth lines, small inclusions and a few rougher zones in the surface emphasise the geological character of the piece and give it a tough Wunderkammer look.
Origin & meaning
Bought at De Zwaan auction house, from Lot 460 of the Christie's South Kensington auction Style & Spirit (25 September 2007). Labradorite is beloved as a stone of protection and transformation and was often presented in cabinets of curiosities as “northern lights in stone” - this sphere evokes exactly that feeling.
