Description
An imposing Pyrite sphere with powerful metallic luster and spectacular crystal clusters - this heavy 1,484-kilo Wunderkammer object is a real eye-catcher. The sphere displays both smoothly polished surfaces and open cavities full of shimmering pyrite grids.
The combination of silver and gold metallic tones, natural fault lines and deep crystals gives this sphere a rugged and geologically fascinating character. The many openings and crystal structures are typical of high-quality pyrite from Peru. The condition is excellent; all cavities and fractures are completely natural and belong to the mineral.
Origin & meaning
Bought at De Zwaan auction house, from Lot 460 of the Christie's South Kensington auction Style & Spirit (25 September 2007). Pyrite has symbolised strength and stability since ancient times and was often presented as a ‘natural metal’ in cabinets of curiosities.
