Description
Atmospheric fossil of petrified palm wood - this 830-gram ball displays a beautiful network of fibrous textures, warm brown tones and finely branched patterns found only in palm root fossil.
The surface combines light cream and sand colours with dark inclusions and a subtle gloss level. The natural areas of deeper brown give the piece character and make it a strong decorative Wunderkammer object. The sphere feels both organic and geological: a fossil millions of years old, but perfectly polished.
Origin & meaning
Petrified palm wood is created when palm roots or trunks replace mineral deposits under high pressure. The result: a fossil with a unique lattice and fibre pattern that is sought after by collectors worldwide. Sourced from Lot 460 at Christie's South Kensington, Style & Spirit (25 September 2007).
