Description
Monumental Sao-Kotoko bronze statue of a horse with three riders, powerful in form and exceptional in size and weight.
This impressive bronze sculpture depicts a horse on which three human figures are placed collectively. The compact, massive composition and heavy bronze give the object a distinct physical presence. The sculpture is elaborate all around and stands firmly on four legs, making it both sculpturally and spatially compelling.
The riders are sober but expressively designed, with stylised heads, notched hair and body details and simple attributes. Their close mutual placement and joint pose reinforce the collective character of the depiction. The horse is powerfully modelled, with an arched neck, distinct mane and decorative bands around the neck and torso.
Origin & meaning
This image fits convincingly within the Sao-Kotoko tradition from the Lake Chad region (present-day Nigeria and Cameroon). Within this culture, horses play an important role as symbols of status, leadership and power. Representations in which several figures are placed together on one horse are seen as expressing collective authority, protection and affiliation, rather than individual hierarchy.
Sao-Kotoko bronzes are known for their robust forms, heavy casting and monumental appearance. Unlike refined court art from other regions, the emphasis here is on mass, strength and symbolic presence. This specimen is a distinct and rare example of this.
