Description
Rare Song dynasty bowl from the Jepara shipwreck, with delicate floral decoration in relief and beautiful celadon glaze.
This bowl combines historical value with exceptional aesthetics. The soft green celadon, partly glazed and partly unglazed, beautifully highlights the subtle relief decoration in the inner surface. The outer surface shows the characteristic salt shell patina typical of objects from the famous Jepara shipwreck.
Origin & meaning
The Jepara shipwreck was discovered off the coast of Java and contained ceramics from the Northern Song dynasty (10th-12th century). Celadon tableware from this period was highly valued both in China and abroad and served as luxury trade goods for the elite. The embossed floral motifs symbolise prosperity and harmony in Chinese imagery.
