A rare terracotta Koma Bulsa double figure from Ghana, with two conjoined figures – a sculpture that makes the spiritual connection and strength of the Koma culture palpable.

This statuette shows two figures rising from a single base, an exceptionally rare type within the Koma Bulsa tradition. Hand-shaped from terracotta, with subtle texture and traces of weathering that bear witness to age and ritual use.

Origin & meaning
Originating from the Koma Bulsa culture of Northern Ghana. These terracotta sculptures served as ritual objects, used in ceremonies surrounding ancestor veneration and healing. Double figures like this are seen as embodiments of connections between souls or ancestors – a rare and powerful symbol of unity within the Koma tradition.

From the collection of the Amsterdam architect Ben Spangberg (1929-2024), which between 1960 and 1980 built up a sophisticated collection of tribal art, known for its aesthetic eye and sense of authenticity. Purchased from auction house De Zwaan, Amsterdam.

Without stand: height 9 cm × width 7.5 cm × depth 5.5 cm; with stand approx. 11.5 cm high. Weight: 0.234 kg. Excellent condition with natural patina and traces of age; professionally presented on black plinth.
