Origin & meaning
Originating from the Koma Bulsa culture in Ghana. These terracotta sculptures served as ritual objects, used in ceremonies to symbolise protection, healing or spiritual unity. Figurines with two figures in embrace are seen as depictions of connection between souls or ancestors - a powerful symbol of unity and continuity.
From the collection of the Amsterdam architect Ben Spangberg (1929-2024), who built up a sophisticated collection of tribal art between 1960 and 1980, known for his aesthetic eye and sense of authenticity.

Without stand: height 9 cm × width 7.5 cm × depth 5.5 cm; with stand approx. 11.5 cm high. Weight: 0.234 kg. Excellent condition with natural patina and traces of age; professionally presented on black plinth.
