Description
Beautiful Yoruba Ibeji male couple with blue hair from Nigeria. These impressive twin statues exude strength and spirituality, with their hefty stature, dark patina and vivid blue pigment residue on the high hairstyles.
Origin & meaning
The Yoruba in Nigeria have a special twin cult. When one of the children died, an Ibeji statue was made to house the soul. Honouring and caring for these statues brought prosperity and protection to the family. Twins were considered spiritually powerful, and so the statues were often given blue pigments and ornate hairstyles to emphasise their special status. The blue on this male couple is probably derived from Reckitt's Blue, a common detergent used ritually at the time; sometimes indigo was also used. Both pigments symbolised purity and protection and indicate actual cultic use. The smoothed faces are the result of prolonged ritual touch and care, which explains the soft, well-loved patina.
Provenance
Christie's South Kensington, 27 March 1990 (lot 221); later De Zwaan Auction House, 2024.
