Description

A rare 19th-century bronze rain drum with exceptionally rich iconography and a beautiful natural patina.

This compact yet heavily made drum (6.7 kg) is decorated all around with a ceremonial boat frieze featuring multiple crew members, a rhythmic dancers' frieze with raised arms surrounded by vertical ritual poles, and four intact frog figures on the lid. The top surface displays the classic cosmic star motif. The combination of the boat procession, dancers, and intact frogs makes this an iconographically complete specimen; rarer than the common geometrically decorated variants.

The patina has formed naturally and is stable; there are no cracks, breaks, or restorations. The reliefs are remarkably sharp and well-defined.

Origin & meaning
Rain drums like this were manufactured in the tradition of the Dong Son culture and used by the Karen, Shan and related peoples in Burma and Northern Thailand in rituals concerning rain, harvest and ancestor worship. Acquired via Auction House Van Zadelhoff, Netherlands.
