Description
Intriguing wooden monkey figure from West Africa with a powerful presence and traces of ritual pigment layers.
This 64 cm-high wooden sculpture depicts an erect, anthropomorphic figure with ape-like facial features: a protruding snout, small eye sockets and a dynamic, slightly hunched posture. The pigment residue on the surface indicates ritual use. The features are possibly consistent with the Mbotumbo or Aboya figures of the Baule (aka Gbekre called), which traditionally served as spiritual guardians - however, a definitive attribution cannot be established with certainty.

Within the Baule In the culture of Ivory Coast, ape figures belong to the category amuin: power objects used to protect against witchcraft, epidemics and hostile influences. Through sacrifices and rituals, these statues built up a strong spiritual charge, making them feared and respected.
