Description
A rare and atmospheric celadon bowl from the Northern Song dynasty (10th-12th century), from the famous Jepara shipwreck in the Java Sea. This bowl displays the austere, understated craftsmanship so characteristic of Song ceramics: hand-formed, with a soft green celadon glaze and decorated with an incised lotus motif in the inner surface.
The bowl measures 18 cm in diameter and 8 cm high. The glaze has a subtle craquelé pattern that attests to its age, as well as some natural firing defects and discolouration from centuries spent underwater. The foot ring shows rough remnants of the firing process.
Bowls like these are popular among collectors of early Chinese porcelain, especially when they come from famous shipwrecks. The Jepara wreck, discovered in the Java Sea, contained a treasure trove of high-quality ceramics. This piece is not only a fine object, but also a tangible piece of maritime archaeology.
A must-have for lovers of Asian porcelain, archaeology or the aesthetics of the Song period.
