Description

Beautiful pair of Japanese Kutani foo dogs from the 19th century, vividly glazed in deep emerald green with gold accents and black scrolls. An exceptional pair of temple lions with powerful expression and impeccable condition - true protectors of home and hearth.

Both dogs - one with open mouth (the ‘a’) and one with closed mouth (the ‘un’) - represent the beginning and end of all things. The open mouth symbolises life, breath, beginning; the closed mouth peace and completion. Together, they guard sanctuaries and dwellings against mischief. The vivid modelling of the hair, the muscular pose and the expressive glaze work show the mastery of the Kutani ceramics tradition.

Origin & meaning
Originally derived from the Chinese lion guardian, the foo dog, or shishi, was given its own symbolism in Japan: guardians of temples and palaces, associated with luck, protection and status. This pair was made in Kutani (Ishikawa prefecture), a region famous for its colourful overglaze decorations. The green-gold colour scheme is typical of late Edo to early Meiji period and was associated with prosperity and sacred power.

Originating from an auction at Venduehuis Den Haag.
