Luba-Hemba decorative comb from Congo with powerful feminine figure and refined details.

This finely carved decorative crest shows on top an elaborate female figure with characteristic face shape and hairdo. The design gives this object both aesthetic and symbolic power, typical of the art of the Luba and Hemba.

Origin & meaning
Decorative combs served within Luba-Hemba communities not only as utensils, but also as status symbols and ritual objects. The female figure emphasises the woman's role as guardian of beauty and fertility. Combs like these were often donated or used in important rituals and carry deep cultural significance.

Dimensions & condition
Height 27 cm, width 8.5 cm, depth 5 cm. The object cannot stand on its own. On the back of the head there are some minor damages to the hair (see photos). Other condition good and appropriate for age.
