Description
An impressive catalogue that instantly touches every lover of Japanese art with its depth, rarity and rich image quality. This edition was published by the Tokyo National Museum in 1990, on the occasion of a special exhibition surrounding Emperor Akihito's accession to the throne.
The book presents 250 exceptional objects from Japanese art history, including rare Shōsō-in pieces, textile art, calligraphy, lacquerware and sculptural masterpieces. The many colour photographs are beautifully printed on glossy paper and give the objects impressive visual power.
This item is from the collection of Clemens Merkelbach of Enkhuizen. It was once given by him as a gift to his partner; the title page still has a small, personal note that gives the book an extra layer and charm. The interior is in excellent condition; a slight discolouration is visible on the lower left front cover, but otherwise the book makes a very well-groomed impression.
Origin & meaning
This catalogue is among the Tokyo National Museum's most prized publications. The selection includes masterpieces from the Nara, Heian and Kamakura periods, among others, many of which are only rarely accessible to the public. This makes the work an important reference book for collectors and connoisseurs of classical Japanese art.
