Description
Origin & meaning
The Mossi are known for combining functionality and ritual symbolism in their art. Catapults were hunting instruments, but the addition of a female figure gave them a deeper meaning. They referred to fertility, protection and the continuity of life. Within African art, such catapults are popular collectibles, as they beautifully reveal the boundary between everyday use and spiritual meaning. This specimen comes from a private collection in Castricum and shows traces of use and age.
