Powerful Mossi wan noraogo cock helmet mask from Burkina Faso, with a rare Dutch provenance dating back to Tom Mercuur.
This expressive helmet-mask, known as a wan noraogo, was used within Mossi culture in rituals around fertility, protection and ancestor worship. The characteristic cockscomb is deeply carved and features remnants of traditional pigments. The natural wear and patina layers show intensive ceremonial use.
Origin & meaning
The Mossi from Burkina Faso are known for their dynamic masking traditions. The cock's comb refers to vitality, combat power and status within the community. These masks were worn during important rites of passage and public dance ceremonies.
This specimen has a special collecting history: it was collected in the 1960s and then ended up in the hands of the influential Dutch collector and museum founder Tom Mercuur. It later came into the possession of a private collector, after which it was sold to Richard ten Borg (Art Gallery Auction), where it was acquired by us.
Dimensions & condition
Depth 32 cm - width 17 cm - height (including stand) 38 cm. The stand is crooked but sturdy.
Wood, natural pigments; traces of age, erosion and use consistent with authentic ritual context. Stable, collectible condition.
