Powerful Lobi statue of a woman from Burkina Faso, with a beautiful wood texture and traces of use that give the piece character and authenticity.
Origin & meaning
This statue is from a private collection in Castricum and represents the Bateba tradition of the Lobi. Bateba statues were used by families as spiritual protectors and mediators between the visible and invisible worlds. The female figure emphasises fertility, protection and connection within the community.
Dimensions & condition
Height 20 cm, width 6 cm, depth 5.5 cm. The statue cannot stand on its own. Condition appropriate to its age, with a nice patina that enhances its authenticity.
