Description

Rare set of 2 Japanese Foo Dogs from the 19th century, executed in deep blue glazed ceramic with powerful appearance and refined details.

Origin & meaning
These protective Foo Dogs, also known as temple lions, traditionally stood at entrances to temples and houses as sentinel figures against negative forces. This is a rare set in ceramic from 19th-century Japan, from Venduehuis The Hague. Both images show vivid expression; one has a small chip, both have typical firing faults, but no restorations have been carried out. This makes the set authentic and attractive to serious collectors.
