Description

A refined set of six Chinese porcelain plates from the 19th century, executed in Kangxi style. The plates are decorated blue and white with the beloved Crab and Fish decor: central a crab surrounded by four fish, surrounded by a floral border with wave pattern. The decoration is powerful and detailed, typical of this style.

Two of the six plates have a small edge chip, the remaining four are undamaged. Despite these minimal imperfections, the set is in excellent condition.

The underside is marked with a blue painted character mark, as is common for 19th-century porcelain in Kangxi tradition.

Origin & meaning
This set of plates dates from China, 19th century, and is made in imitation of the famous Kangxi period (1662-1722). The Crab and Fish decor symbolises abundance, prosperity and harmony in Chinese culture.

The combination of floral motif and sea creatures made this service popular with both the Chinese elite and exports to Europe. Plates with this decor are particularly sought after by collectors of Chinese blue and white porcelain today.
