Description

Charming Chinese Imari plate from the 18th century, a wonderful entry piece for collectors.
This 17 cm diameter porcelain plate shows the distinctive combination of deep cobalt blue and iron red that makes Imari so beloved. The central panel shows a garden landscape with pavilion, framed by floral motifs.

Origin & meaning
Originating from the Dr J.E. van der Meulen (1848-1941) Collection, purchased at Veilinghuis de Zwaan in 2024. Imari porcelain was manufactured in China in the 18th century, inspired by the Japanese export style that took Europe by storm. These pieces were popular at European courts and in wealthy homes, where they exuded status and sophistication.

Dimensions & condition
Diameter 17 cm. The plate has a hairline of about 4.5 cm and some chips and frittings on the rim (see photos). Despite the signs of use, this remains an attractive and authentic collector's item.
