Description

Authentic Abelam braided helmet mask from the Wosera/Maprik zone, with powerful ritual appearance and beautiful age patina - a rare opportunity for serious Oceania collectors.

This traditionally crafted Abelam helmet mask (20th century) is among the distinctive woven ritual objects of East Sepik, Papua New Guinea. The mask is constructed of tightly woven rattan and plant fibres, with the typical spiral eyes, vertical nose ridge and deep soot patina created by ritual use and storage in men's houses (haus tambaran). The warm colour gradient, smoke patina and light wear give the piece a strong, authentic look.

Origin & meaning
Abelam masks were used in yam ceremonies, initiations, ancestor worship and secret societies. The spiral eye openings allude to ancestral vision, while the helmet-shaped construction symbolically linked the wearer to spiritual protection. Similar specimens are in important museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (object 313783), clearly placing this piece within the same cultural typology.

Dimensions & condition
Deep 37 cm, wide 32 cm, high 30 cm. In good traditional condition with slight losses to the lower edge of the wickerwork, small gaps due to natural ageing and convincing ritual patina. No restorations. A powerful, authentic and aesthetically strong piece from the Maprik region.
