Description

Authentic Attié sculpture pair from Ivory Coast with rich details and symbolism.

This impressive pair of Attié statues, man and woman, is a rare example of Ivory Coast's refined woodcarving art. Their expressive faces, carefully applied cylindrical protrusions all over the body and colourful beaded necklaces around neck, arm, waist and leg, exude status and ritual significance. The woman also wears ornate earrings made of beads, and both figures wear loincloths, reinforcing their cultural authenticity.

Origin & meaning
The Attié belong to the Akan peoples and are known for their realistic and spiritually charged sculpture. Such sculptures were often made in pairs, with husband and wife together forming a harmonious and protective force within the community. The beads and protrusions may refer to status, fertility and spiritual protection. The execution and details of these statues indicate an experienced master sculptor, which increases their collector's value.
