Description
Large and sculptural Bamana door lock from Mali, carved from hardwood and featuring a richly decorated horizontal bolt and a powerful, heavily stylised finial.
Wooden door locks are among the most characteristic utilitarian objects within the Bamana art of Mali. This substantial specimen consists of a vertical lock plate and the original horizontal bolt. Both parts are extensively decorated with geometric, incised patterns. The broad finial is strongly abstracted, giving the object an almost modern sculptural character.
Such locks were used for locking the doors of houses and granaries. The vertical lock plate was attached to the door, while the horizontal wooden bolt moved through the lock. An internal system of pins blocked the bolt and could be unlocked with a key.
Within Bamana culture, their significance went beyond mere practical use. Doors and granaries protected the home, its inhabitants and the food supply. Figurative and symbolic forms on the locks could therefore also have a protective meaning. Door locks were crafted by specialised blacksmiths and woodcarvers and could be passed down from generation to generation.
The combination of the large format, the striking abstract design and the deep patina of use also makes this piece particularly attractive as a standalone sculptural object.
