Description

Impressive bronze bell from Cameroon with human figure and geometric decoration, fully intact and still with deafeningly clear sound.

This massive bronze bell depicts a characteristic stylised figure with fine scarring, ring-shaped ears and an expressive pose. The underside is decorated with an embossed face composed of rhythmic circular patterns. The object was cast using the lost wax method and possesses a beautiful natural green patina.

The bell is complete with original clapper and still fully functional - the sound is powerful and clear. Traces of use and age are present, such as appropriate patina and light surface wear, with no damage or restorations.

Origin & meaning
Such bronze bells were used within the Grassfields-cultures of Cameroon used in ceremonial gatherings, especially within the court traditions of the Bamileke and Bamum. They served as royal status symbols and communication tools to announce the presence of the monarch or a priest. The human figure refers to the spiritual power of ancestors, which offered protection and legitimacy to the wearer. This specimen is from the collection of Vergulde Kat, acquired at Heritage Auctions Europe.
