Description
Powerful Dhyangro ritual drum from western Nepal, used by Magar shamans. This double-sided instrument has a deeply spiritual function and was used in rituals to contact the spirit world.
Origin & meaning
The drum features a beautifully carved wooden handle in the shape of a phurbu dagger, richly decorated with shamanic symbols and figures. Inside, small balls move, producing additional sounds when shaken. Visible on both sheets is the red-painted trident of Shiva - a sacred symbol adopted by shamans in their ritual practice. This makes the drum an impressive object with a strong connection between Hindu iconography and Nepali shamanic tradition.
Dimensions & condition
Diameter 27 cm, height 9 cm, total length including stem 67 cm. The drum shows traces of use appropriate to its age, but is in good ritual condition.
