Description
Pair of impressive Kutani dishes from the Meiji period (circa 1900), 32 cm diameter, richly painted in vibrant colours.
These beautiful Japanese porcelain dishes were made around 1900 in the typical Kutani style. They are decorated with cartouches of birds and maple leaves on a deep red background, framed by intricate patterns in blue, green and gold. The decoration is fresh, the colours saturated - typical features of Meiji enamel work in the shoza and gosai tradition. One dish shows a slight distortion due to the firing process, recalling the artisanal production of the time.
Origin & meaning
Kutani porcelain comes from the Ishikawa region of Japan and is known for its five-colour overglaze technique (gosai-de). During the Meiji period (1868-1912), this type of porcelain was produced in large quantities for both the domestic market and exports to Europe. Large dishes like this pair were popular showpieces, intended to impress in interiors and collections.
Dimensions & condition
Diameter: 32 cm
Condition: both dishes are in strong condition with a bright glaze and intact decoration. One saucer contains slight thermal deformation (acceptable feature in handmade Meiji porcelain). No chips or repairs visible.
