Charming Guanyin figurine in partly gilt copper from China, c. 1900, with fine details and marked at the bottom.
Origin & meaning
Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, is represented here in meditation pose with hands in namaskaramudra (prayer gesture). Statues like this one served both for domestic devotion and as a protective presence in temple or altar settings. The underside bears a Da Qing mark, referring to the Qing dynasty, although this specimen was manufactured around 1900. Origin: De Zwaan auction house.
Dimensions & condition
Height 11 cm. Good condition with natural patina and wear to the gilding befitting its age. The mark on the underside is clearly visible.
