Description

For collectors who fall for raw, lived-in tribal art, this Korwar skull statue from Papua is an irresistible reliquary ancestor image.

This monumental Korwar skull sculpture from Papua depicts an ancestral figure with large cubic head, deep round eyes and a body clutching tightly to an openwork, pierced pillar. The exceptionally rough patina, heavy erosion and numerous ancient insect corridors betray a long traditional life; this is not a smoothly polished gallery piece, but an honest, archaic sculpture with an almost archaeological appearance. At 46 cm tall, it is an impressive sculpture that immediately catches the eye in a Wunderkammer display or in a serious Oceania collection.

Origin & meaning
Korwar statues are ancestor statues from Papua (Indonesia), mainly associated with the Bird's Head region and surrounding islands. They depict important ancestors who offered protection, were asked for advice and played a mediating role between the world of the living and the spirits. This specimen is among the rare reliquary Korwars: The construction with hollowing between head and torso and the large block-shaped head indicate that the sculpture was originally made to encompass a human skull. In the traditional context, the skull of an ancestor was placed in the cavity and fixed with fibre or resin; through the large, bulbous eyes, the ancestor symbolically looked out over the community. The vertical pillar full of piercings surrounding the figure can be read as a spiritual gateway through which the ancestor's power reached the village.

This Korwar skull sculpture comes from the collection of an elderly Dutch collector from Sloten, who had been collecting tribal art and Asian objects for many decades and acquired many pieces himself locally in Asia. In 2023, the sculpture was bought directly by Vergulde Kat from this collector, making its provenance clear and transparent. The combination of reliquary type, large size, pronounced rough patina and strong private provenance makes this a rare and characterful collector's piece.

This statue fits into the tradition of Korwar statues from Papua, which we write about in more detail in our article Korwar statues from Papua: power and meaning.
