Origin & meaning
This object comes from the famous Jepara shipwreck, which lay on the seabed for centuries before it was salvaged. The black spots on the glaze are characteristic of experimental decoration techniques from the Song period. In Chinese ceramic history, the Song dynasty is known for its subtle beauty, sophisticated glazes and timeless forms. Shipwreck finds like this one are not only archaeologically interesting, but also particularly popular with collectors of maritime heritage and Asian ceramics.
