Description
Small but characterful Taíno amulet from the Caribbean, carved from bone and with a calm, convincing appearance.
This small Taíno object suggests Yucahu for, the deity who was worshipped as protector of agriculture and livelihood. Due to its compact size and personal scale, it is plausible that this type of object was used as a amulet or protective item.
The simplified forms and balanced, seated pose give the object an understated strength. The surface shows a warm, time-softened patina with natural colour variations in the bone.
The amulet comes from the Collection of Jozef and Brunhilde Steib and was acquired as early as the early 1960s. The early European collection and clear provenance make this an attractive and well-documented Taíno object.
