This expressive image stands out for its large painted ears, brightly coloured collar and skirt, and feathers attached on top of the head. The Hemis kachina is closely associated with the Niman ceremony, the farewell ritual by which kachinas return to the spiritual world.
Origin & meaning
The Hemis kachina symbolises abundance and harmony, and is traditionally seen as a bringer of blessings during harvest and rites of passage. This specimen is from the collection of Amsterdam architect Ben Spangberg (1929-2024), collected between 1960 and 1980.
