This antique kachina displays an understated yet expressive design, with a striking blue helmet, red cylindrical nose and a decorative white kilt with coloured patterns. The black feathers on top reinforce the spiritual power of this statue.
Origin & meaning
The Chakwaina is among the most important kachinas of the Hopi and often appears during winter and spring ceremonies. It symbolises protection, strength and discipline. This specimen comes from the collection of Amsterdam architect Ben Spangberg (1929-2024), collected between 1960 and 1980. An asset for any serious collector of Hopi kachinas.
