Origin & meaning
The Mongwu, or Great Horned Owl, is one of the most important guardians in Hopi tradition. He appears during ceremonial dances to keep order and teach children respect. His round eyes and dotted face allude to the owl as a symbol of wisdom and vigilance. This kachina served to introduce young Hopi to the spiritual world and their place within the community.
Dimensions & condition
Height 42 cm, width 22 cm, depth 11 cm. Condition: signs of use appropriate to age, original polychromy and headdress well preserved. Provenance: Veilinghuis de Zwaan (2024).
