Origin & meaning
The Butterfly Maiden, also known as Palhik Mana, symbolises growth, harvest and renewal. The orange wing shapes on either side of the head represent the butterfly, a powerful sign of transformation. The colourful geometric patterns refer to rain and crops, and the feathers on top connect earth and sky. Traditionally, this type of kachina was made to introduce children to the spiritual world, but today they are loved as art objects.
