Powerful Hopi Chakwaina kachina with expressive details, beautifully executed with black vertical stripe across the face, teeth and red-and-black paint patterns.

Origin & meaning:
This Chakwaina, also known as the Black Warrior Katsina, symbolises strength and protection. In Hopi tradition, he often appears in ceremonial dances as a martial figure who guards order and instils discipline in young people. The black vertical stripe, rectangular mouth with toothed structure and powerful appearance emphasise his role as a punishing spirit.

Provenance: Collection of Amsterdam architect Ben Spangberg (1929 - 2024), collected between 1960-1980.
