Description

Impressive Hopi Sio Salako Mana kachina with monumental appearance and colourful symbolism. This 44 cm tall statue depicts the female Salako spirit wearing a tall square headdress, fitted with four tabs in the ceremonial colours black, red, yellow and green. These colours refer to the four winds and the cosmic order, an essential part of Hopi spirituality. The carefully painted patterns symbolise clouds, rain and fertility, themes of central importance in Pueblo life.

Origin & meaning
The Salako Mana appears as the female counterpart of the Salako Taka during important Hopi rain ceremonies. The addition 'Sio' indicates an older or varying style, with traditional motifs executed in a unique way. Pueblo art includes kachinas, ceramics, textiles and jewellery, and is known for its deep spiritual symbolism and rich formal language. This sculpture, with its high headdress and cosmic colours, embodies that tradition in full force.
