Description
Truly an eye-catcher full of colour, emotion and character - this Fali ancestor statue from Cameroon immediately catches the eye.
Wood worked into an anonymous figure, completely covered with shiny beads in red, blue, yellow and white, interspersed with shiny cowrie shells. The hairstyle is a graceful combination of beads and rope. Remarkable: no face has been deliberately carved, giving the sculpture a timeless mystique-it tells its own story. The beads are beautifully tightly arranged around the body; the warm patina betrays respectful care. Every detail breathes ritual and beauty.
Origin & meaning
The Fali peoples in northern Cameroon made such sculptures as a tribute to deceased loved ones-a symbol of love, connection and protection. Beads and shells enhance that ritual charge with rich colour and meaning.
