This unusual wooden statue from northern Cameroon is richly decorated with beads in white, blue, red and orange. The face has been deliberately omitted, giving the statue a mysterious and spiritual look. The beads run around the head, chest and waist, and the whole is nicely balanced with the dark wooden core. The patina shows that the statue has lived, while the decoration still stands out beautifully.
Origin & meaning
The Fali, a people from northern Cameroon, make such statues to honour ancestors and ask for protection. Beads represent wealth, connection and protection. The lack of a face makes the statue timeless and symbolic, allowing it to represent all ancestors.
