Description
Set of two blue and white Kangxi plates (11.5 cm) with garden and pavilion scene, finely painted in underglaze blue with two elegant figures behind a balustrade, flowering branches and cloud motifs. The wide rim shows a composed band with alternating panels and floral motifs.
Underside: underglaze blue decoration with a continuous geometric band (trellis/wanzi-like) in which small round cartouches with floral rosettes; central within a double circle a single character brand in blue. Wide, unglazed foot ring with light age wear.
Condition: both plates with chips on the edge (clearly visible in the photos); otherwise original and attractive in painting and gloss.
Origin & meaning: these plates date from the Kangxi period (1662-1722) of the Qing dynasty, known for the high quality of blue and white porcelain. The garden scene with figures refers to refined court life and literati culture, in which pavilions and gardens symbolised tranquillity, civilisation and connection with nature. The marked underside with geometric band is typical of high-quality export pieces destined for both the Chinese market and European exports.
