Description
Colourful Amsterdams Bont bowl from China, 18th century, painted with parrots and butterflies in vibrant enamel colours.
This beautifully executed bowl is a fine example of the so-called Amsterdams Bont: Chinese porcelain that was overglaze enamelled in the Netherlands. The decoration with parrots, butterflies and flower sprigs exudes vibrancy and belongs to the classic motifs of this type. The inside is richly decorated, with a flower branch in the centre and birds and butterflies all around.
Origin & meaning. Amsterdams Bont became popular in Amsterdam in the 18th century, where Dutch painters provided Chinese porcelain with colourful layers of enamel. This produced unique objects that reflected the tastes of the European elite: exotic, playful and decorative. This bowl is from auction house Korst van der Hoeff and clearly shows the sophisticated interplay between Asian porcelain tradition and Dutch decorative art.
Dimensions. Diameter 15 cm, height 7 cm. Condition: with a baking flaw at the bottom (see photos), otherwise in collectible condition.
Reference: see also the matching version with parrots, butterflies and rabbits.
