Description

Powerful Yaka power statue from DR Congo with subdued appearance and clear traces of ritual use.

This expressive sculpture depicts a standing figure with an elongated head and closed, calm facial expression. The body is wrapped with old textiles and cord, indicating ritual acts in which the statue was actively used as an object of power or protection. Remnants of white and dark pigments on the face reinforce its spiritual character.

The sculpture is attributed to the Yaka culture from DR Congo and exhibits features reminiscent of so-called Dikidiki-figures, known for their role within protective and activating rituals. The austere, balanced design and visible signs of use give the object a convincing presence.

Origin & meaning
Within Yaka culture, power statues were used as mediators between the visible and invisible worlds. They acted as carriers of spiritual energy and were used in healing, protection and social rituals. This specimen comes from the Werner Fischer collection and later from the collection of Kelim Brown (Brussels), adding to its reliability and collector's value.
